Introduction to Biodiversity
India is home to millions of living beings — from micro-organisms and bacteria to banyan trees, elephants, and blue whales. All these organisms, including humans, form a complex web of ecological systems in which each species is interdependent. Plants, animals, and micro-organisms together maintain the quality of air, water, and soil that sustain all life.
India ranks among the world's richest countries in terms of biological diversity, with the actual number of species possibly two to three times more than what has been discovered so far. Despite the immense importance of this biodiversity in daily life, it is under increasing stress due to human insensitivity toward the environment.
