Introduction to Water Resources
Three-fourths of the earth's surface is covered with water, yet only a small proportion of it is freshwater available for human use. This freshwater is mainly obtained from surface run-off and groundwater, which are continually renewed and recharged through the hydrological cycle. Since all water moves within the hydrological cycle, water is considered a renewable resource.
Despite water being a renewable resource, countries and regions around the globe suffer from water scarcity. It is predicted that by 2025, nearly two billion people will live in absolute water scarcity. Water scarcity is not always caused by low rainfall alone — it is also caused by over-exploitation, excessive use, unequal access, and poor water quality.
