India has three distinct cropping seasons: Rabi, Kharif, and Zaid. Rabi crops are sown between October and December and harvested between April and June. Maize is both food and fodder and is grown as a kharif crop in old alluvial soils, with major producers being Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Pulses — tur, urad, moong, masur, peas, gram — are India's primary protein source. India is the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses. Most pulses are leguminous crops that help restore soil nitrogen except arhar.

Sugarcane is a tropical and subtropical crop requiring temperatures of 21°C–27°C and rainfall of 75–100 cm. India is the second largest producer after Brazil. Uttar Pradesh is the leading producer, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Tea is a plantation beverage crop introduced by the British and now mostly owned by Indians. It requires tropical and sub-tropical climates, deep fertile well-drained soil, and abundant cheap labour. Assam and West Bengal (Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri) are the leading producers; India ranked second globally in 2020 after China.

Coffee, specifically the Arabica variety from Yemen, is cultivated in Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, having originated from Baba Budan Hills. India is noted for its high-quality coffee. Oil seeds — groundnut, mustard, coconut, sesamum, soyabean, sunflower — cover about 12% of the total cropped area. India was the second largest groundnut producer in 2020 after China, with Gujarat as the leading state. Rubber, an equatorial crop requiring over 200 cm of rainfall and temperatures above 25°C, is primarily grown in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Cotton, jute, hemp, and natural silk are India's four major fibre crops. India is believed to be the original home of the cotton plant and is the second largest producer after China. Cotton is a kharif crop needing 210 frost-free days, high temperatures, and 6–8 months to mature, grown primarily on the black cotton soils of the Deccan. Jute, known as the golden fibre, grows on well-drained fertile flood plains and is used for gunny bags, mats, ropes, and carpets. West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam are major jute producers. Sericulture — rearing silkworms on mulberry leaves — produces natural silk.

India ranked second globally in 2020 in fruit and vegetable production. Important fruits include mangoes (Maharashtra, UP, West Bengal), oranges (Nagpur, Cherrapunjee), bananas (Kerala, Tamil Nadu), apples and walnuts (Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh), and grapes (Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra). India is also an important producer of peas, cauliflower, onion, cabbage, tomato, brinjal, and potato.

After independence, the government prioritised land reforms through collectivisation, consolidation of holdings, cooperation, and abolition of zamindari. Land reform was the main focus of the First Five Year Plan. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Green Revolution (package technology) and White Revolution (Operation Flood) were launched to improve agricultural productivity. However, these benefits were concentrated in select regions, prompting a comprehensive land development programme in the 1980s and 1990s.

The government introduced crop insurance against drought, flood, cyclone, fire and disease; Grameen Banks and cooperative societies for low-interest credit; and schemes like Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (PAIS). Special weather bulletins and agricultural programmes on radio and TV were also introduced. Minimum support prices, remunerative prices, and procurement prices are announced to protect farmers from exploitation by middlemen. The Bhoodan-Gramdan movement led by Vinoba Bhave, which encouraged voluntary land donation by zamindars to landless farmers, is also known as the Bloodless Revolution.

Agriculture in India is not just an economic activity but the foundation of the country's food security, rural employment, and industrial raw material supply.
