Key concept recap
Introduction
All organisms, even the largest, begin life from a single cell. Growth and reproduction are fundamental characteristics of all living cells. Every cell reproduces by dividing into two daughter cells, each of which can themselves grow and divide, ultimately allowing a single cell to give rise to structures consisting of millions of cells.
Cell division is coordinated with DNA replication and cell growth. The sequence of events by which a cell duplicates its genome, synthesises cellular constituents, and eventually divides into two daughter cells is termed the cell cycle. These events are under strict genetic control to ensure formation of progeny cells with intact genomes.
