Question 1
Long FormCompare and contrast the characters of Sophie and Jansie.
Sophie and Jansie are classmates, but their personalities are completely opposite. Sophie is an incurable dreamer who refuses to accept her lower-middle-class reality. She fantasises about owning a boutique, becoming an actress, or working as a fashion designer, ignoring the fact that these require money she does not possess. She lives in a world of hero-worship, building an illusion around the football star Danny Casey. In contrast, Jansie is highly practical, grounded, and realistic. She knows they are both earmarked for the biscuit factory and accepts her destiny. Jansie constantly tries to pull Sophie back to reality, urging her to be sensible and warning her against daydreaming. While Sophie seeks an escape from her mundane life through wild fantasies, Jansie firmly represents the harsh, unavoidable truth of their socio-economic condition, showing maturity beyond her years.
