Question 1
Long FormDescribe the make-up department of Gemini Studios and the 'hierarchy' maintained there.
The make-up department of Gemini Studios was situated upstairs in a building believed to have been Robert Clive’s stables. It looked like a hair-cutting salon surrounded by blazing incandescent lights, subjecting the actors to immense physical discomfort or 'fiery misery.' Interestingly, the department was a prime example of early national integration, headed successively by men from different Indian states, assisted by people of varied regional backgrounds. A strict hierarchy was observed here regarding who did the makeup for whom. The chief make-up man handled the lead actors, his senior assistant worked on the second hero, and the junior assistant managed the main comedian. The 'office boy' was responsible for applying makeup to the crowd players. This structured division of labour highlights the studio's organized but rigid professional environment during the early days of Indian cinema.
