The female reproductive system consists of paired ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia and mammary glands. Ovaries produce the ovum and steroid hormones. Each fallopian tube (10–12 cm long) has an infundibulum with fimbriae, an ampulla and an isthmus. The uterus, shaped like an inverted pear, has three layers: perimetrium, myometrium and endometrium.

The external genitalia include mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, hymen and clitoris. Mammary glands contain 15–20 lobes with alveoli that secrete milk. The milk flows through mammary tubules, mammary ducts, mammary ampulla and lactiferous ducts to the nipple. The presence or absence of hymen is not a reliable indicator of virginity.

Spermatogenesis begins at puberty, triggered by GnRH from the hypothalamus. GnRH stimulates LH and FSH secretion from the anterior pituitary. LH stimulates Leydig cells to produce androgens, while FSH stimulates Sertoli cells to support spermiogenesis. Spermatogonia undergo mitosis to increase in number; some become primary spermatocytes that undergo meiosis I to form secondary spermatocytes (23 chromosomes), then meiosis II to form four haploid spermatids. Spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa by spermiogenesis, then released by spermiation.

A mature sperm has a head (with haploid nucleus and acrosome), neck, middle piece (with mitochondria for energy) and tail (for motility). Oogenesis begins during fetal development; oogonia form primary oocytes that arrest in prophase I. At puberty, primary follicles develop into secondary and tertiary (Graafian) follicles. The primary oocyte completes meiosis I to form a secondary oocyte and first polar body. The Graafian follicle ruptures (ovulation), releasing the secondary oocyte. Meiosis II is completed only after fertilisation.

The menstrual cycle is the reproductive cycle of female primates, lasting about 28–29 days. It begins at menarche (puberty) and ends at menopause (~50 years). The cycle has four phases: menstrual phase (days 1–5, endometrial breakdown), follicular phase (follicle maturation and endometrial regeneration), ovulatory phase (LH surge causes Graafian follicle rupture and ovum release on ~day 14), and luteal phase (corpus luteum secretes progesterone to maintain endometrium).

If fertilisation does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, progesterone levels fall, and the endometrium breaks down leading to menstruation. During pregnancy, the menstrual cycle stops entirely. Cyclic menstruation between menarche and menopause is an indicator of normal reproductive health.

Fertilisation occurs in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube. Sperms deposited in the vagina swim through the cervix and uterus to reach the ampulla. A sperm contacts the zona pellucida of the secondary oocyte; acrosomal enzymes help penetration. Changes in the zona pellucida block polyspermy. The secondary oocyte completes meiosis II, forming a haploid ovum and second polar body. Fusion of the haploid nuclei forms a diploid zygote (46 chromosomes).

Sex determination occurs at fertilisation: XX zygote develops into a female and XY into a male. The zygote undergoes cleavage as it moves through the isthmus, forming 2, 4, 8, 16 blastomeres. An 8–16 blastomere embryo is a morula; further division forms a blastocyst with a trophoblast and inner cell mass. The blastocyst implants in the endometrium, establishing pregnancy.

After implantation, chorionic villi develop from the trophoblast and interdigitate with uterine tissue to form the placenta. The placenta supplies oxygen and nutrients to the embryo and removes CO2 and waste. It is connected to the embryo via the umbilical cord. The placenta also acts as an endocrine gland, secreting hCG, hPL, estrogens, progestogens and relaxin. The inner cell mass differentiates into ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm (three germinal layers).

Key developmental milestones: by 1 month, the heart is formed; by 2 months, limbs and digits develop; by 12 weeks (first trimester), major organ systems including external genitalia are formed; by 5 months, first foetal movements and head hair appear; by 24 weeks (second trimester end), body is covered with fine hair and eyelids separate; by 9 months, the foetus is fully developed and ready for delivery.

Parturition is the delivery of the foetus after the 9-month gestation period, induced by a neuroendocrine mechanism. The fully developed foetus and placenta initiate the foetal ejection reflex, causing mild uterine contractions and triggering oxytocin release from the maternal pituitary. Oxytocin causes stronger contractions, which stimulate more oxytocin — a positive feedback loop until delivery. After delivery, the placenta is also expelled.

Lactation begins towards the end of pregnancy as mammary glands differentiate. The first milk secreted is colostrum, rich in antibodies essential for the newborn's immunity. Breast-feeding during the initial months of infant growth is recommended for healthy development. Prolactin and other hormones maintain milk production.

Human reproduction is a complex, coordinated process involving the male and female reproductive systems. From gametogenesis through fertilisation, implantation, embryonic development, parturition and lactation, each stage is regulated by precise hormonal signals. The chapter establishes how structural features of the reproductive system are directly linked to their functions, and how hormones like GnRH, LH, FSH, estrogen, progesterone and oxytocin orchestrate the entire reproductive sequence.

For CBSE board examinations, this chapter is highly important as questions frequently test knowledge of reproductive organ structure, the stages of spermatogenesis and oogenesis, the menstrual cycle and its hormonal regulation, embryonic developmental milestones and the role of the placenta.
