Introduction to Evolutionary Biology
Evolutionary Biology is the study of the history of life forms on earth. To understand the changes in flora and fauna over millions of years, one must understand the origin of life in the context of the evolution of earth, stars, and the universe itself. The story of life on earth is the longest conjectured narrative, weaving together cosmology, chemistry, geology, and biology.
The universe is about 13.8 billion years old and consists of huge clusters of galaxies containing stars and clouds of gas and dust. Earth, a speck in this vast cosmos, was formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Life appeared approximately 500 million years after earth's formation, almost 4 billion years ago, marking a unique event in the history of the universe.
