Introduction to Ecology
Ecology is a branch of biology that studies the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their physical (abiotic) environment. It provides a holistic perspective by weaving together different areas of biological information, allowing us to understand how individual organisms interact with other organisms and their habitats to behave as organised wholes — populations, communities, ecosystems, and the biosphere.
Ecology is concerned with four levels of biological organisation: organisms, populations, communities, and biomes. When observing nature, scientists ask two types of questions — 'how-type' questions that seek the mechanism behind a process, and 'why-type' questions that seek the significance or evolutionary advantage of the process.
