Introduction to Solutions
Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of two or more components whose composition and properties are uniform throughout. The component present in the largest quantity is called the solvent, which determines the physical state of the solution, while the other components are called solutes. In everyday life, pure substances are rarely encountered; most materials are mixtures whose utility depends on their composition.
This chapter focuses on binary solutions — solutions containing exactly two components. Each component may be solid, liquid, or gaseous, giving rise to nine possible types of solutions. Understanding solutions is essential because almost all biological and industrial processes occur in some form of liquid solution.
