Introduction to Carbonyl Compounds
Carbonyl compounds are organic molecules containing the carbon-oxygen double bond (>C=O), known as the carbonyl group. This unit covers three major classes: aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids — all of which are widespread in nature and vital to biochemical processes.
In aldehydes, the carbonyl carbon is bonded to at least one hydrogen atom, while in ketones it is bonded to two carbon atoms. Carboxylic acids contain a carboxyl group (–COOH), which is a carbonyl group attached to a hydroxyl group. These compounds contribute fragrance, flavour, and structural material to both natural and synthetic products.
