Introduction to Biomolecules
Living systems are made up of non-living atoms and molecules that together form complex biomolecules. The study of the chemical processes occurring within living organisms is called biochemistry. The major biomolecules found in living systems include carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, all of which interact with each other to constitute the molecular logic of life.
Simple molecules such as vitamins and mineral salts also play important roles in the functioning of organisms. Proteins and carbohydrates are essential constituents of food. This chapter discusses the structures and functions of these vital biomolecules, which collectively sustain growth, reproduction, and all biological activities.
