Key concept recap
Where I Begin, Where I Flow
The river Godavari tells its own story of a long and winding journey that starts high up in the mountains. It begins as a small stream at Trimbakeshwar in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra before traveling across the land. As it moves, rainwater and other smaller streams join it to make it wider and stronger for its long journey.
Small streams that join a larger river are called tributaries, and they help the river grow in size. The Godavari travels a total distance of 1,465 kilometres across different states of India. It finally reaches the end of its journey when it flows into the Bay of Bengal, making it the second longest river in India after the Ganga.
