The Professor decides to stop presiding over meetings because of the traumatic experience he had at Azad Maidan in the alternate world. Being heckled and forcibly removed from the stage made him realize that the tradition of 'presiding' had become obsolete and irrelevant to the public. More importantly, he was deeply shaken by the realization that reality is fragile and subjective. He no longer felt the need to participate in the formal public life that defined his old identity.

The Jijamata Express serves as the vehicle that carries the Professor into his 'adventure.' It represents the modernization and efficiency of the alternate India he is entering. The fact that it travels faster than the Deccan Queen and passes through a landscape without the familiar industrial townships signals to the reader and the Professor that something is 'off.' It sets the stage for the scientific and historical mystery that unfolds as the Professor moves closer to the unfamiliar Bombay.
