Glory at Twilight overview
Glory at Twilight by Bhabani Bhattacharya is a poignant narrative that explores the fragility of social status and the burden of past reputation. The story centers on Satyajit, a man who once rose from a humble clerk to become the Managing Director of a prominent bank through sheer grit and a stroke of luck involving a forgerer. However, the 'wheel of fortune' turns once more, and Satyajit finds himself in a state of sudden financial ruin after his bank collapses. All his private assets, including his house and cars, are gone overnight. He is now a man 'sucking the dust' of his own wreckage, traveling on a slow, narrow-gauge train to his ancestral village, Shantipur, to attend the wedding of his neighbor's daughter, Beena.
Satyajit’s journey is an attempt to escape the suffocating reality of the city and find solace in his roots. However, he arrives to a hero’s welcome. Uncle Srinath and the villagers still view him as a millionaire, a 'son of Bengal' who has conquered the world of trade. Satyajit finds himself trapped in a lie; he lacks the courage to confess his bankruptcy because he craves the 'wide-eyed wonder' and 'eager homage' of the villagers. He decides to play the part of the wealthy benefactor one last time, basking in the 'lingering twilight splendour' of his departed glory. This internal conflict is heightened by his memories of the forgerer he once caught—a man who committed a crime to save his dying wife. Satyajit now realizes that life’s desperate circumstances can push anyone toward compromise.
