Question 1
Long FormDescribe the 'misadventure' that William Douglas experienced at the YMCA pool.
The 'misadventure' at the YMCA pool was a terrifying near-death experience that deeply scarred young William Douglas. One day, while he was waiting alone by the pool for others to arrive, a well-built, muscular boy of about eighteen picked him up and tossed him into the deep end as a practical joke. Douglas, who was already fearful of water, landed in a sitting position and immediately sank to the nine-foot bottom. Despite his panic, he formulated a plan to spring upwards to the surface. However, his leaps failed to bring him out of the water completely. He desperately flailed his arms, swallowed water, and choked as stark terror paralyzed his limbs. After three unsuccessful attempts to save himself, his strength completely faded, and he blacked out, crossing into oblivion before finally being rescued.
