Question 1
Quick RecallWhy did Douglas prefer to go to the YMCA pool to learn swimming?
Douglas preferred the YMCA pool because it was considered significantly safer than the dangerous Yakima River, where several drownings had occurred. His mother frequently warned him about the river's treacherous nature. In contrast, the YMCA pool offered a controlled environment to learn swimming. It was only two or three feet deep at the shallow end, and although it dropped to nine feet at the other end, the slope was very gradual, giving him a false sense of security.
