Introduction to Resources
Everything available in our environment that can be used to satisfy our needs — provided it is technologically accessible, economically feasible, and culturally acceptable — is termed a 'Resource'. Resources are not free gifts of nature; they are a function of human activities. Human beings transform materials available in the environment into resources through an interactive relationship between nature, technology, and institutions.
Resources can be classified on the basis of origin (biotic and abiotic), exhaustibility (renewable and non-renewable), ownership (individual, community, national, and international), and status of development (potential, developed, stock, and reserves). Human beings are themselves essential components of resources, as they possess the technology and knowledge needed to convert raw materials into usable resources.
