Meaning of Controlling
Controlling is one of the most important functions of management. It means ensuring that activities in an organisation are performed as per the plans and that organisational resources are used effectively and efficiently for achieving predetermined goals. Controlling is, therefore, a goal-oriented function.
Controlling is a pervasive function performed by managers at all levels — top, middle and lower. It is not the last function of management but rather one that brings the management cycle back to the planning function. By finding out deviations, analysing their causes and taking corrective action, controlling completes one management cycle and improves the next.
